SAVE OUR
Wild Seas
A big thank you to all those who donated to the Save Our Wild Seas appeal to help protect Dorset’s marine wildlife. Thanks to your generosity, we raised £15,830. Our Marine Awareness Officer, Julie Hatcher describes some of the work that has already begun to survey Dorset’s marine life and determine where our conservation action will be best placed.
Our Wild Seas Surveyor volunteer team undertake different types of seashore and snorkelling surveys and have done a marvellous job in helping us carry out these important surveys. This is a fantastic opportunity for people to explore the seashore and learn more about what lives there.

Shoresearch surveyors
Our crab survey, led by Kimmeridge volunteer Val Fogarty, is monitoring the increase in a new arrival to Dorset’s shores, the furrowed (or Montagu’s) crab, and any potential impact on the edible crab population. Since the survey started in 2021, we have recorded an annual increase in furrowed crab numbers, a native to southwest England, which is increasing further west at an incredible rate.
Peacock’s tail seaweed, Padina pavonica, is a warmer water species at the northern edge of its range in Britain and a feature of the Purbeck Coast Marine Conservation Zone. The aim of the survey is to record any changes in abundance of this nationally scarce species.

Wild Seas Surveyor survey training
Shoresearch is The Wildlife Trusts’ national survey of intertidal wildlife. These surveys help us better understand our coastline and monitor changes in distribution and abundance over time. In 2023, four surveys were carried out in Dorset, at Portland Harbour, Lyme Regis, Kimmeridge and the Fleet Lagoon. In total, 30 volunteers collected 175 species records.
There has never been a more critical time for the future of our seas – thank you for supporting our mission.
