Remembering someone special with a gift for wildlife

We are always deeply touched when we find out that we have been included in somebody’s will. Many people also choose to donate in memory of loved ones, to a cause that was meaningful to them. We are privileged to share the story of Jean and Susan Leaver, and commemorate their very generous support.

Mother and daughter, Jean and Sue were valued members and supporters of Dorset Wildlife Trust with family connections to Poole and the sea going back many generations. Jean’s grandfather was a sea captain and other family members were fishermen. Jean and Sue both gave their time generously to the Trust as volunteers, getting involved in activities such as dragonfly and sand lizard surveys and guided walks to spot nightjars, all at Upton Heath. Sue also enjoyed joining volunteer work parties to help maintain the heathland habitat. On top of that, Jean and Sue were both active members of the Poole local members’ group, with Sue acting as treasurer.

With a particular love of Brownsea Island, Sue volunteered there for many years, providing a warm welcome to visitors and sharing her passion for what was a very special place for her. When Sue passed away in 2021, friends and neighbours came together to donate to Dorset Wildlife Trust in her memory. In total, just under £1,000 was raised in memory of Sue, to help fund maintenance work on the area of Brownsea Island that we manage for wildlife.

In November 2022, Jean sadly passed away and we were touched to find out that she had very kindly included a gift of £15,000 to Dorset Wildlife Trust in her will.  Her thoughtful and generous gift will help to protect the wildlife and nature that meant so much to her.

Perhaps you too have fond memories of spending time in nature, and places that are special to you. If you would like to know more about leaving a gift in your will to help protect Dorset’s wildlife and natural places, or donating in memory of a loved one, we would love to hear from you.
